Workshop “Envisioning integrity of European quality food chains”

High technical-scientific level for the Workshop “Envisioning integrity of European quality food chains” organised by TCA, in collaboration with the University of Parma and the Spanish partner ainia, and held yesterday afternoon in downtown of Milan at the Società Umanitaria facilities.

Di grande spessore tecnico-scientifico il workshop “Envisioning integrity of European quality food chains” organizzato da TCA, in collaborazione con l’Università di Parma e il partner spagnolo ainia, e tenutosi nel pomeriggio di ieri nel centro di Milano presso la Società Umanitaria.

The workshop started with the welcome of the moderators, Raffaello Prugger (TCA), Prof. Nelson Marmiroli (UNIPR) and Jorge Molina (ainia), who summarised as a recent success history of national and European research initiatives has created the background and the aggregation environment necessary for the realization of this International event. Eleven speakers, including five Italians and six foreign partners (of many different European countries) have followed in multidisciplinary interventions, dealing with issues surrounding the food chain integrity in its multiple facets (quality, traceability, authenticity, security, applications, logistics, standardisation, certification, etz..).

Each speech, independently from its nature or current sector of application, each one with its own peculiarities, has provided new ideas and visions that could guarantee a profitable collaboration for future joint project initiatives with an integrated vision and a strong impact, typical of large collaborative projects that have characterised the recent Calls of the EU research Framework Programmes.

Hanno aperto i lavori i tre moderatori, Raffaello Prugger (TCA), Prof. Nelson Marmiroli (UNIPR) e Jorge Molina (ainia), riassumendo come un recente passato di iniziative di ricerca nazionali e comunitarie di successo abbia creato le basi e l’ambiente aggregativo necessario per la realizzazione di questo evento internazionale. Undici speaker, di cui cinque partner italiani e sei stranieri (di altrettanti Paesi europei differenti) si sono susseguiti in interventi multidisciplinari, trattando di tematiche attinenti l’integrità di filiera nelle sue molteplici sfaccettature (qualità, tracciabilità, autenticità, sicurezza, applicazioni, logistica, standardizzazioni, certificazioni, etc.).

Ciascun intervento, che derivasse dal mondo della ricerca o dal mondo industriale o da applicazioni afferenti a settori diversi, ognuno con proprie peculiarità, ha fornito nuove idee stimolanti, spunti di riflessioni e visioni che possono di fatto trovare punti di collaborazione per future iniziative progettuali congiunte con una strategia integrata e con forti impatti, tipici dei grandi progetti collaborativi che hanno caratterizzato le Call degli ultimi programmi quadro della ricerca europea.

Tecnoalimenti, in cooperation with University of Parma, Dept. of Environmental Sciences and AINIA Centro Tecnològico (Valencia), is organising an international call-for-ideas workshop on “Envisioning Integrity of European Quality Food Chains“. Attendance is open to interested organisations.

Date and location: 21 March 2012, 13:00-16:00 at Società Umanitaria, hosted by plef, (Room: Sala Bauer), Via San Barnaba 48 (MM3 Crocetta or MM1 San Babila), Milano, Italy.

“Food chain integrity” is a new term that includes not only food quality, authenticity, safety and security against supply chain disruptions but also management of product information along the entire food chain. The European food industry is envisioning a scientific and technological progress in preparing tools to address the prospects set by the emerging food chain integrity approach, in order to allow the food chain to perform its function and provide a stable and confident food supply to the European citizens. The objective of this workshop is to map research activities and capabilities in the light of future research.

BASELINE project Platform now open for companies

BASELINE project: Selection and improving of fit-for-purpose sampling procedures for specific foods and risks

BASELINE is a FP7 European Project involving 20 scientific organisations and companies aimed at revisiting and harmonising sampling procedures for microbiological and chemical risk in food. The project will investigate and develop new sampling procedures as basis for a future European regulation. 3rd International Forum on Food and Nutrition, Milan

Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition BCNF also this year, for the third, time organised the International Forum on Food and Nutrition at Bocconi University on Nov 30th and Dec 1st, 2011. High level speakers from all the world met to make the point on the issue of sustainability of the food production. To give you the flavour of the issues raised, a couple of pills of information are the following:
- The current world paradox: one billion people are starving, another billion people are obese. Often both phenomena coexist in the same communities. A reason is that current food products are mainly “nutritionally unsustainable” because providing “empty” calories.
- Access to food is easy, to nutrition is harder. Price of junk foods increased of 30% in the last 30 years; the price of fresh fruits of 120%. You can access soft drinks anywhere in the world, but fresh fruit and vegetable not.
- In the US a total of about 70% of the harvested mais goes to non-human food uses (61% feed to animals and 39% to biofuel). No wander that prices of food staples rose of 40% in the last 20 years.

TRACEBACK and TCA at the “What’s for Lunch Conference”

Interactive conference of a decade of EU-funded research into food integrity.
International conference held on the 20 September 2011 at the European Parliament, Charlemagne Building, Brussels.
Several TRACEBACK project partners partecipated as speakers (University of Parma, Ainia, Parmalat) in the session chaired by Tecnoalimenti.

Food integrity is becoming increasingly important; authenticity, origin of food, geographical location (terroir), traceability and security and safety of food production requires new diagnostic tools and implementation of new information systems.

The What’s for Lunch conference is an event focused upon parliamentary decision makers and it is organised by the coordinators of 8-10 major European research projects which include some of the world’s largest food safety research projects in the areas of microbiology, chemistry and food production technologies. It is worth recalling that at the begining of the last decade the European Parliament specifically requested that the Sixth Framework Programme dedicate part of the specific programme budget to food traceability and integrity. The event will demonstrate what has been done in this respect and what has still to be done to ensure proper food chain integrity and food security.

Thanks to the insights acquired coordinating the Integrated Project TRACEBACK, Tecnoalimenti chaired the session about Traceability of Quality parameters. You can see the recordings of the presentations on the webstreaming site of the European Commission.
